ANDREW MACALISTER longs for a cure to free him from the excruciating pain caused by an old wound, but when he rescues a drowning woman, he has no idea how much his life is about to change. All Drew knows is that this mysterious woman is hiding secrets — and that he’s never felt such a consuming desire before. Yet he cannot deny her request for help, even if it means bringing the detested English army to his Highland clan’s home.

LEAH NOBLE MCQUARRIE still harbors a deep hatred of the Fae who tortured her eleven years ago, forcing her to escape back in time to the thirteenth century. A descendant of the Fae, Leah denies her heritage and her magical healing abilities. But the English army is holding her beloved adoptive grandfather captive, so Leah must seek help from the Fae — and the captivating man whose touch she craves.

Then Drew discovers Leah’s secrets, and he’s torn between old loyalties and trusting a woman who has the power to give him the future he’s sought — but could destroy his clan forever. . . .

My Review

Leah was once treated in horrid ways by the Fae, and managed to escape and made a life for herself in medieval Scotland. Even though she is from a more modern era, she has grown accustomed to life in Scotland, in the 1300’s. When her adopted grandparents find themselves in trouble, Leah is determined to save them. When their son betrays them, and takes over their home and clan, and about to force Leah to marry a stranger, she escapes. She heads north, to a clan, that are kin to her grandmother, and are the only ones that can help them. On her way, she slips in a river, and is saved by a highlander, who protects her and takes her to his home. When they are followed by English knights and soldiers, they have no choice but to go under a false pretense of being married. Before they realize it, they will have to go through a real wedding, to make the soldiers believe their feelings are true. Andrew, has suffered a most painful injury, and is searching for anything that will aid in his pain that he suffers every moment. When he finds the truth about Leah, he realizes that she is his salvation….but sometimes love gets in the way of intentions and can change the course of fate…

Healing the Highlander is a fantastic addition to the Daughters of the Glen series that Mayhue has created for us. This does have a bit of time travel aspect, but we don’t really see it, since it happens before the book begins, so its pure guess on what happens to Leah when she is younger, or maybe its revealed in a earlier book I have yet to read. The story starts off with Leah’s life taking a turn for the worse and she is forced to flee her home to aid in the safety of her grandparents. Leah is a very strong willed character, and is willing to do whatever it takes to save the people she holds most dear. Then she ends up being a “damsel in distress” and a highland warrior saves the day. Drew, doesn’t believe himself to be worthy of a wife or a family due to his injury. He has to work hard every day to make sure he isn’t a invalid from his leg injury. These two definitely need each other, but in a variety of ways. It starts out very simple, the hero saving the heroine’s life and they just go their merry way right? Wrong….the reader is thrust into a plot that is packed with twists that creates conflict against conflict, but only draws the reader fully into the story even more. The characters are such fun and I enjoyed seeing this couple together, and how they complimented each other. Each had their secrets, strengths and weaknesses, and toward the end you see how wonderful they are for each other. Reading this definitely made me want to read the rest of the series that I have yet to get my hands on.

Overall a romance that takes you back in time where history and magic prevail, where a conflict threatens to destroy all, and a passion that turns into a journey of love and adventure. A sweeping tale of love and magic!! PURE MAGIC!!

It Takes A Lady

Brilliant scholar Genevieve Barrett knows how to keep a secret. Her identity as the author of her father’s academic articles has always been her greatest deception—until a charming housebreaker tries to steal the mysterious Harmsworth Jewel from her. She doesn’t reveal that she recognizes her father’s devastatingly handsome new student as the thief himself. For Genevieve, this will be the most seductive secret of all…

To Catch A Thief

Sir Richard Harmsworth has been living a lie, maintaining a rakish façade to show society that he doesn’t care about his status as a bastard. Yet long haunted by his unknown father’s identity, Richard believes the Harmsworth Jewel will confirm his claim as the rightful heir. But when Richard sets out to seduce the bookworm who possesses the stone, he instead falls for its beautiful owner. But even as she steals Richard’s heart, Genevieve will be in greater danger than her coveted treasure..

My Review

Sir Richard Harmsworth, has had to work very hard to gain respect as a member of the Ton, despite the fact he is a bastard. When he learns that a certain artifact, a jewel, will prove his legitimacy, his goal is to obtain it no matter the cost. Genevieve, is a scholar, and is the writer behind all of her fathers work. She hopes with the Harmsworth Jewel that was given to her, by a elderly woman who was always kind to her, that she will create a name for herself and have a career. She is content in being a spinster, until a certain rake comes along and stirs a hidden passion in her. Richard has come to seduce Genevieve into his bed, to gain the jewel, but as the progresses further into his seduction, he starts to lose his heart to her. Can he still go through with his plans or will the lovely Genevieve be his future?

A Rake’s Midnight Kiss is the second in this fantastic series that Campbell has created for us. Ever since I read the first book last year, I was hooked. I fell in love with the first one, so I had super high expectations for this one. However despite how much I enjoyed it, I think I was expecting a story to make me fall in love again just like”Seven Nights in a Rogue’s Bed” did. There are quite a few things that I did enjoy about it. And it still was a lovely romance that kept me hooked all the way through. The beginning set the stage for the story in such a perfect way, I couldn’t have imagined it any better. There is a scene of Genevieve being robbed, only the robber doesn’t know she is at home and she surprises him, and oh boy…..did this scene definitely made me laugh and stir up all kinds of senses. It took my breath away and I guarantee you won’t have any problem getting started with this one. We see Richard slowly seducing Genevieve, in very creative and playful ways, you just want to trade places with the heroine so you can experience it too. The heat in the story isn’t explosive or anything, its more of a gradual journey for them both, and the scenes were a bit steamy but not over much…just perfect for the style of this author and the way the story turns out.

The characters in this story were such fun. Richard, is a rake and a rogue but a fun one. He isn’t all serious or anything, to me he was as playful as a kitten and passionate as any grown man would be. We definitely see his faults first hand, but he makes up for it in many other ways that I am sure will delight the reader. The heroine was stubborn and very “Bluestocking” and I loved how Richard uses creative ways to soften her up. She has never been courted really, and has always known books and study and scholarly pursuits. It was very interesting seeing a different side to Genevieve blossom in ways you don’t expect from the beginning. We do see the other sons of sins in this book. We see Jonas and Sid-and they added some flavor to the story and it was fun seeing their involvement in helping this couple work their issues out since they have already obtained their HEA. Then we see Cam who is the next book. And oh boy, did he give me tingles in anticipation for his book–should be a whopper. There is a villain in the story but the villain isn’t fully realized until later half of the book, so his involvement in the story definitely adds a edge of suspense and tension that you don’t expect in the beginning but will blow you away in the end!!!

Overall A tender romance that is guaranteed to pull at the emotions and make your forget about reality and you live in the precious moments between Genevieve and Richard.  BEAUTIFULLY DONE!!

Throwback Thursday (15) Cole

Throwback Thursday is a new meme hosted by Buried Under Romance and Love Saves The World, and since I just love Historical Romance I decided to participate.

What Is Throwback Thursday? Traditionally, Throwback Thursday celebrates nostalgia, asking participants to post a personal photo or image from their past–usually from 5 to 10 years ago. There are a lot of book blogs that also do a book related Throwback Thursday

Here Are The Rules: 1. It must be posted on a Thursday. 2. It must be a historical romance novel published before October 3, 2008

The last time Cole MacKenzie saw Maggie O’Shea, the daughter of his gold-hunting partner, Pop, she was a scruffy kid with dirt on her cheeks. Now the tomboy is all grown up — and how! — and she’s Cole’s sworn responsibility, since the suspicious passing of his dear old friend. But being Maggie’s new legal guardian may be more than the footloose loner can handle — especially since he’s been aching of late to hold her close and tight.

How dare Cole MacKenzie think he can run her life! True, she’s had a crush on him since forever, but Maggie won’t be treated like a child — especially not by a powerfully good-looking wanderer who makes her flush with wanting him. Cole says he’s not ready to stay put, yet he’s not going anywhere until he’s satisfied Pop’s death was a natural one. But will that leave Maggie enough time to prove to the man how much of a woman she’s become?

Why Cole?
This is part of one of my all time favorite historical romance western themed series. And I loved the detail and the fun story lines that grab you attention from page one. Hard to put down these are!! Guaranteed for pure pleasure!

Buffalo, New York—Thundering waterfalls, great sports teams . . . and a treacherous Vampire Lord who is slowly losing his mind. New York City vampire Rajmund Gregor is the undisputed master of The Big Apple. He bows to no one but his Sire, the Vampire Lord Krystof, who has ruled the Northeast for hundreds of years. But when Krystof summons Rajmund to his headquarters in Buffalo, Raj finds his master slowly descending into madness and his territory crumbling around him. Raj is the only one of Krystof’s children strong enough to seize power, but he’ll have to save his master before he can destroy him. Several women have gone missing and the local police are convinced a vampire is behind it. Is Krystof so lost to reality that he’s capturing and murdering human women? Is a rogue vampire moving into Krystof’s territory for the kill? Or is it something far more insidious, something that could threaten the existence of vampires everywhere? Sarah Stratton is living a lie. Her past holds a secret she shares with no one—not even her good friend Cynthia Leighton, the West Coast vampire lord’s mate. It’s a secret that could destroy her carefully constructed life as a professor at a Buffalo university. It’s also a secret that could save the lives of the missing women. To save them, however, she must enter Buffalo’s vampire community and put herself into the care of Rajmund Gregor. But can she trust Raj, the dangerously seductive vampire who wants to lay claim to far more than her secrets?

My Review

Sarah Stratton, has started a new life for herself, in Buffalo, with a successful job and apt and building friendships. Lately she has been having nightmares of young women being kidnapped, and feeling terror. When her friend Cynthia, meets up with her in New York, wanting to gain the truth from her, Sarah is reluctant to share the truth with even her closest friend. But while at a club with her friend and her vampire husband, Raphael, she meets Rajmund Gregor, a vampire never to be trifled with. Rajmund is the most powerful of Krystoff’s children. And as Krystoff grows weaker and making foolish decisions, Rajmund is getting reading to take over. When he is ordered by his lord, to come to Buffalo and investigate into the disappearance of the missing girls, he knows he has no choice, but is curious into finding out who is responsible. Then he meets Sarah again, who is involved somehow. Deep down Rajmund knows what and who Sarah is to him, a weakness, a little woman that could change his whole world, in a way he isn’t ready for. Soon Sarah and Rajmund will be thrown into a plot full of danger and mystery, and a passion that is ready to break free and overcome them both…

Rajmund is the third in the Vampires In America Series. I was able to get a ARC of this title through Netgalley and ImaJinn books. I have been addicted to this series ever since I read “Aden”. This world that D.B. Reynolds has created is probably one of my favorites, especially when it comes to vampires. There is such a realism to it, and in some ways its how one would imagine a life where vampires and human coexisted together, in somewhat harmony.  In Rajmund we travel to the east coast, which is where Rajmund resides. Rajmund may not be a vampire lord yet, but he is close to becoming one. We see more into Sarah and her past, and her secret. She has a talent or a curse, which may be the key to saving some innocent girls lives. Rajmund is a powerful vampire, with power about to break free. Their relationship begins in New York, where Rajmund begins his slow seduction of Sarah. Sarah doesn’t see herself as attractive or sexy, at least not to attract Raj’s attention, but somehow she has. Then when she returns home, they find each other again, and the sexual tension goes into overdrive. Their relationship is built more on desire than trust in the beginning. But as the danger towards Rajmund and Sarah threatens to consume them, so does their passion for each other. We see that neither are ready for what is about to come, and I felt that their relationship only gets stronger with every struggle they face, even a struggle that could destroy what they feel for each other.

Rajmund is a powerful vampire, alpha and territorial, and possessive. PURE DELICIOUS MALE!! Loved him. He was very different from Raphael or Aden in many ways. He is more subtle in his power, even though you see that its bursting to break free. His treatment of Sara is mouthwatering, and I wish at many times I could trade places with her. His character is full of depth and I enjoyed discovering a new layer of Raj with each chapter. Sarah was a enjoyable character. I understood her reasons for keeping certain truths from Rajmund, since she couldn’t even tell her closest friend. She has had to live in fear most of her life. You see her vulnerability from the very beginning, and you only want to be on her side. This heroine definitely grabbed my attention and I could help but find her likable. We do some of Raphael and Cynthia, which is also fun.

Rajmund is a powerful paranormal romance that is one heart stopping thrill after another. There is no end to the passion, intense emotion or the suspense driven tale that makes your toes curl. It does contain a cliffhanger, they was very unexpected and left me hanging, but its not too overdone, yet at the same time made me want to pound my pillow!! Overall a well done job for D. B. Reynolds, who yet again has won me over!!! PURELY THRILLING!!

First Line
It was totally dark. She touched her fingers to her eyes to make sure they were open.

Favorite Quote
“Really? And why is that Raj? I am tired of you thinking you have the right to control me. You are not my boyfriend, and you sure as hell are not my keeper, so from where I stand, you’ve got no claim on me what so ever. Like the song says, you don’t want me for yourself so let me find someone else. It’s shit or get off the pot time, Raj. It’s now or never, Time to-” She gave a shriek as Raj swung an arm around her waist and lifted her off her feet. He threaded the fingers of one hand through her hair and pulled it aside, freeing the long line of her neck.
“Then I choose now,” he growled and sank his fangs into the velvet skin of her neck puncturing the fragile walls of her jugular.

Welcome to Valentine Valley—where broken hearts come home to mend, and true love may lie just across the range . . .

Emily Murphy never thought she’d return to her mom’s rustic hometown in the Colorado Mountains. But after her marriage in San Francisco falls apart, leaving her penniless and heartsick, she returns to her old family home to find a new direction for her life. On her first night back, though, a steamy encounter with handsome rancher Nate Thalberg is not the fresh start she had in mind . . .

Nate has good reason not to trust the determined beauty who just waltzed into town—he’s no stranger to betrayal. Besides, she’s only there to sell her family’s old property and move back out. But as Nate and Emily begin working side-by-side to restore her time-worn building and old family secrets change Emily’s perception of herself, both are about to learn how difficult it is to hide from love in a place known far and wide for romance, family ties, and happily-ever-afters: a town called Valentine

My Review
Emily has just recovered barely from a bitter divorce, and has come to the small town Valentine to sell her mothers restaurant, when she encounters a sexy cowboy who makes her head spin with his kisses. Emily’s plan is to fix the place enough to sell, then go to San Francisco to go back to college. Nate is a rancher, and his life is full of taking care of his responsibilities. When he sees a beautiful young woman, he is intrigued when they share a passionate encounter that makes him forget everything but having her in his arms. As Nate starts to help Emily repair her mothers restaurant, they start to build a friendship which slowly turns into something more than either of them imagined. Soon Emily will have to make a choice a life in the big city where she knows no one, or a life in Valentine Valley with a man who loves her?

A Town Called Valentine is the first in the series. I have seen this author pop up quite a bit lately, and since I am a fan of Avon romances, I decided to pick this one up at the library. I do love the sweet contemporary westerns, and this one fit the bill 100%!! I had read some mixed reviews, so I was a bit nervous to read this one, and now that I have read it, I definitely need the other books in the series. I fell in love with this story. It has a fun beginning, with Emily coming into a bar for a bit to eat when she first arrives, where her car breaks down. Nate challenges her to a game of pool in the back and the bet is a kiss, and then Nate keeps popping up helping her out when she needs him. Thus begins a sweet and slow courtship. There is also a bit of a mystery involved when Emily learns that her birth father may be in town but she has no idea who he is. Plus with some involvement of some elderly ladies, one who is Nate’s grandmother, who think of themselves as matchmakers, adds to the mix of this charming romance.

The characters were lively and fun and very endearing. They captured my heart from the beginning. Nate is a heart melting cowboy whose smile makes you want to melt. I loved him as the hero. Nate is a helper, and is very involved in the community. I loved him as a “Good Boy” even though he does have a bit of a daredevil side to him. He loves risk. He doesn’t settle for any woman, and has the record of never dating a woman longer than 10 dates. Emily is a woman that has been hurt by her ex, and all she wants is to have children, even if she has to adopt. She is very independent, and I loved seeing how she starts from letting no one help her out, to building close bonds to the Valentine Valley, even though she tries to close herself off from doing so. The side characters definitely were lively and fun. I liked how they added the extra spice to the story.

This story is charming and a classic contemporary western that warms you from your head to toes. A captivating romance that is impossible to put down, with heart endearing characters, fun engaging plot, a dialogue to capture your attention,  and a sweet tale that will make you believe in finding the happily ever after when you least expect it. A FAVORITE OF WESTERN ROMANCE!!!
