Blurb

Tristan, the newest Dragon King, is having a tough time fitting in. Despite his ability to transform into a proud, strong dragon at will, no one knows where he came from or how he became a Dragon King, including himself. When trouble arises in the form of the mob, Tristan is going to have to put aside his questions and band with the other Dragon Kings to protect Dreagan. As if things weren’t complicated enough, he is about to find something worth fighting for more important than the Dragon Kings…

Sammie Miller, pub owner in Oban, has been scorned by her business partner—and former lover. Used as a front for money laundering with the mob, Sammie is in great danger once she realizes what has happened. Barely escaping, she plans to rest at Dreagan for only a day before going back on the run. When Tristan swears to protect her, Sammie thinks his efforts will be in vain—the mob is too powerful, and it will take more than the average man’s devotion to keep her safe. But the closer she gets to Tristan, and the more he learns his secrets, Sammie can’t deny that having a Dragon King who worships you, body and soul, isn’t such a bad thing…

My Review

Summary

Sammi Miller, has always lived a tame life, a bar owner in Scotland. She loves doing what she does, and it honors her mother who is gone. But when she learns that her partner, best friend, and ex lover, had stolen money from a mob to support the bar, she ends up seeing him killed, her bar blown apart, shot in the shoulder and on the run from the mob. After a while of being on the run, she knows she needs to find a place of safety, even just for a few days. And there is one place that she has in mind…Dreagan Industries. She has a half sister, Jane, and she knows that she will be safe. But when she arrives, she meets the stunning Tristan. He is gorgeous, sexy and has a past that haunts him. Tristan and Sammi end up together, when Sammi’s enemies increase, and the mystery of why become more pronounced. Tristan knows he will do everything in his power to keep his mate safe from their enemies, but will their love be enough to save them…

The Hero

Tristan, is the newest member of the Dragon Kings. He has a past, but he has no knowledge of his past, or how to interact with his twin. The truths that are revealed in this story, connect to Dark Sword series. Tristan is a strong hero, despite the fact he has no idea who he really is, he knows where he belongs…with the Dragon Kings. He is part of a brotherhood. His reaction to Sammi is intense, he knows that she is something special, but he can’t pinpoint why. What I loved most about Tristan, is the way he is about Sammi. He has alpha male tendencies…the need to protect and fight for what is his. And even though his character is still struggling because of issues of his past. He is the type of hero, that doesn’t focus on the past so much as the present and future. He is a fighter, gorgeous in his dragon form, and very sensual. I loved seeing the connection to the other series. Although I am not sure how I liked the way he was with his twin. I felt so bad for Ian, and there were moments in this story that it was just heartbreaking. But you also see how Tristan develops as a character and the way he changes is very engaging.

The Heroine

Sammi Miller, is a business owner, and in the beginning quite innocent of anything that exists other than humans. Sammi, even though she has a half sister, doesn’t know what to make of their relationship. She misses her mother, who raised her and started the pub. At the beginning you see how close she was to her. Sammi’s world is torn apart and now is running for her life. Sammi is reluctant to go to her sister, because she doesn’t want to risk her safety. Sammi is independent and stubborn, and is adamant that this fight is her own. But the moment she enters Dragan Industries, that all changes. Despite being injured and battle worn from running for a whole month with a bullet in her shoulder…this woman has fortitude. I came to admire her character. She did have some flaws, I felt she was being a bit too hardheaded about some things. And I wanted to shake her and call her “idiot”, but I could also see where she was coming from. If I was in her place, I might have done the same thing. What I liked about her character was her fighting spirit and how she never gives up. Sammi is put through the ringer, and what courage she has. I loved how she wants to make her own way and not lean on the hero. Although with Tristan…as sexy as he is…it would be the highest temptation. Sammi was a fascinating character and she had many qualities that I look for in a heroine.

Plot and Story Line

Now first I want to say that if you plan on reading this series, you need to start with the Dark Sword series. I would highly recommend it. There are many connections to that series. You don’t have to, but it will make more sense if you do. Now it is a historically based series, but has the same tone of paranormal elements as the Dark Kings have. It is very well done, so I would recommend it. And who can resist Donna Grant? Because I can’t. 🙂 Now about the plot of Fire Rising…it was exciting and thrilling. There was so much going on here that if you knew it all, you might become overwhelmed at the beginning. But Grant has a wonderful way of weaving together a story and the way she blends in scenes, characters, climaxes and attention to detail, you won’t be overwhelmed in any way. This has everything you need for a stunning paranormal romance that will you have on edge from beginning to end. There is no end to the action. I loved the tone of the story, which is full of suspense and unique plot twists. The romance itself is wonderful, and we see as the characters grow….so does their relationship. The steam isn’t super hot, but it is plenty sexy, and I loved seeing how these two come together.  There is quite a depth to the story as well, and the villains of the story, oh my…they were written so well. They definitely prove themselves as matches for the Dragon Kings…only the Dragon Kings are experienced, talented, and nothing can stop them. Loved how they band together to fight off the latest threat. The ending…I enjoyed it, as for Sammi and Tristan there is no cliffhanger. But there is a small one, so I hope it continues off in the next book. I can hardly wait…

Cover

I have really enjoyed the covers of this series. They are what drew me to this author and this series. On Fire Rising, we have a image of the hero (Tristan) and what a gorgeous model this is. Oh yeah I could put this on my wall, frame it and gaze at it all day. The imprint of the red dragon on the center, is simply delightful. I never know how I will feel about tats, some are good and some aren’t. But this cover…is HOT!!. I really also liked the swirling mist, which goes with certain aspects of the story. They did great with this cover, because it goes with the story hand in hand. Hot Cover…Sexy book…perfect match!

Overall View

Donna Grant brings to us another great installment to the Dark Kings. Fire Rising is a intensely weaved story that is full of compelling characters, steamy action, fast paced scenes, and a love story that is deliciously sexy.
Favorite Quotes

Sammi watched him walk toward her.

He walked like a predator, a conqueror. A king who ruled and commanded all. He was sex and sin, decadence and sensuality.

He was, simply put, spectacular

Rumors swirl around the castle about “The McLeod” but Larena knows the truth. Like Fallon, Larena is searching for a way to vanquish the evil Druid who wants to wreak havoc on earth. Drawn to Fallon in spite of her fear, she surrenders to a passion that shocks them both with its raw intensity. But Larena dares not hope for more—not when she holds a secret that could turn her fiery Highland love against her forever…

My Review

I truly loved this one and many of the elements of the story had me captivated. I have recently fell in love with Grant’s historical paranormal series, and this series is so unique and different and not what you expect, in fact I might lean toward a bit more fantasy. In Forbidden Highlander we have three brothers, who are immortal, and each of them have a beast inside of them, with godlike gifts. Fallon’s brother has been taking hostage by their nemesis and he is desperate to find a way to free him, the key one woman…Larena Monroe. Larena is in hiding, from their mutual enemy and seeks refuge from being on the run every day of her life. What she doesn’t expect to find is her future mate, a man to love and stand by her side. This story pretty much starts off after the first book left off, and I would highly recommend you read this series in order. the first book really sets the tone for the series, and even though Grant explains the background information, I feel you really need the first book to understand more fully what is happening in this story. i really liked the various qualities that made this story a true gem. Donna Grants has such a compelling storytelling ability, and draws you into the story in ways you don’t expect. There is no dull moment in this book, and I was pretty much at the edge from beginning to end. What I truly loved was seeing the brothers and the complexity of the plot that works its way into the story, we see some very intense moments and boy did I just love this one almost as much as the first book. What a wild ride of adventure, dangerous villains, plenty of steamy action and sword fighting, and a powerful romance to steal your heart.

Synopsis
The bold and passionate Lucan MacLeod–one of three brothers cursed by dark magic for eternity–is driven by desire for the one woman he dare not let himself possess…

He is magnificently strong–and dangerously seductive. One of the fiercest of his clan, Lucan MacLeod is a legend among warriors, inspiring fear in man and woman alike. For three hundred years, he has locked himself away from the world, hiding the vengeful god imprisoned in his soul. But then, a young lass caught in a raging storm awakens his deepest impulses…and darkest desires.

Cara doesn’t believe the rumors about the MacLeod castle–until the majestic Highland warrior appears like a fiery vision in the storm, pulling her into his powerful arms, and into his world of magic and Druids. An epic war between good and evil is brewing. And Lucan must battle his all-consuming attraction for Cara–or surrender to the flames of a reckless, impossible love that threatens to destroy them both..

My Review

Cara lost her parents when she was just a girl, and was found by some villagers while wandering the forest.. Now she is a grown woman, and is planning on being a nun, when a child gets sick, she goes in search of herbs. But she also has a curiosity about MacLeod Castle, while getting too close, she ends up falling down a cliff, and is rescued by Lucan MacLeod. Lucan, and his brothers, are known among legends and myths. The only ones to survive a attack on their clan, and have god’s put in them, and now Lucan has spent years imprisoned in this castle, fighting off warriors spent by their enemy,  and now he can’t let Cara go. For the first time in his life, he feels more alive and vibrant than ever. But when it become clear, that Cara has magic herself, he knows that he has dragged her into a world of danger and intrigue…but also a deep desire that will consume them…

Dangerous Highlander is the first installment in the Dark Sword series, but it does have connections to other series as well. One of the things that I loved most about this one, was the setting and style of the plot that we have set in place here. So its set in the 1600’s Scotland, so we have a setting of medieval history relevance, but we also have a dark paranormal spin to the story as well, which always intrigues me, but this one is so different than other paranormal historical’s I have had the opportunity to read. It has such a deeper feel to the story, and is pretty intense at times. The heat between Cara and Lucan is pretty sexy and hot, and sometimes I am in the mood for something softer, but in Dangerous Highlander, this story had exactly what I was looking for. It has some elements in the plot that are dark, but more in the paranormal element and the more see of the villain, the more you despise her.

This story has plenty of unique scenes that just wraps its way around you and make you sigh in that falling in love feeling. Lucan and Cara were such fun to see their story unfold, even though there is plenty of danger, you also see how these two have a bond from the beginning. I am really admiring this author and the way she has built this world of danger and passion and a story overwhelms you and you just can’t let it go until the end. A story that will bring such intense emotions and will capture you heart and soul!! STUNNING IN EVERY DETAIL!!

Synopsis
The Dark Kings have fought for centuries to preserve their dragon magic. But one of the most powerful warriors of his kind will be put to the ultimate test. Is he strong enough to resist his greatest temptations? Or will he be forced to surrender – body and soul?

Her beauty is a weapon

Denae Lacroix is a beautiful MI5 agent on a deadly mission. Sent to the Scottish Highlands to spy on the mysterious Dreagan Industries, she discovers too late that she’s been set up – as human bait. She is an irresistible lure for a man who has not seen or touched a woman for centuries. He is a man with a destiny – and a desire – that could destroy them both…

His passion is a curse…

It’s been twelve hundred years since Kellan has walked among humans – and there’s no denying the erotically charged attraction he feels for Denae. But as a Dragon King, he is sworn to protect his secrets. Yet the closer he gets to this smart, ravishing woman, the more her life is in danger. All it takes is one reckless kiss to unleash a flood of desire, the fury of dragons…and the fiercest enemy of all.

My Review

Denae, even though American, is a MI5 agent and she is sent on a dangerous mission. She is told to go to the Highlands, and spy and gain information on Dreagan Industries. When she and her partner arrive at some caves, her partner attacks her, saying that she is the “bait”, and as she fights him she kills him. But then she ends up injured and wakes up in a strange place, a place that will change her fate. Kellan, is a Dragon King, and has been sleeping for twelve hundred years, and has stayed away from humans. But then he gets awakened by Denae, a woman of passion and intelligence, and even though he despises humans, he can’t resist a yearning for her. When a rogue group from MI5 with dark fae, threaten her, Kellan discovers he will do everything in his power to protect her, but they will both discover a hidden passion that will consume them…will Kellan and Denae be able to fight their enemies and gain a future together…

Darkest Flame is the first book of the series, and over the years since reading romance, I have seen high rating sand reviews for this author. But this is the first chance to read it. When I was browsing through my local library, trying to decide where to start, the idea of dragon shifter kings…well that really got me to pick this one up, and the cover….I just want to drool all day. This series is connected to the Dark Warrior and Dark Sword series (which I plan on reading as soon as I finish this series off). And its primary focus is on a group of Dragon Kings, who had to give up their dragons and place them in a another realm, while they battle their enemies…the fae, and keep everything from the human world.

The story started off a bit slow for me, even though there is plenty of action and steamy attraction between Denae and Kellan, the story doesn’t really start to pick up until your about a third of the way through the story. The beginning sets the stage for the main sequences of the plot. There is quite a intense heat level in this story, the chemistry between Kellan and Denae is SUPER hot and sexy!! They definitely can create their own heat source…each other. Who needs a heater or the sun right? I admit I have a weakness for shifter romances…but you throw in dragon kings..well that totally does it for me…I do love my dragons. There is something so fierce, protective and intense about them that fascinates me and Donna Grant does a fabulous job with her world building in this story.  Even though there are some previous kings that have their stories already (which I already am planning another trip to the library just to read their books :p) , the author did a tremendous job at setting up the background of the story, so you aren’t too lost or confused. Even though I wished I had read some of the other connecting series, I didn’t feel like I needed more, Grant does a good job at balancing everything out.

Overall a captivating mixture of sensual romance, intoxicating characters, interwoven plot that will keep you on edge, and enough steam to keep you warm for days. Perfect for a warm cold night with a cup of tea. BEAUTIFULLY CRAFTED!!
