Synopsis

Miss Lydia Charingford is always cheerful, and never more so than at Christmas time. But no matter how hard she smiles, she can’t forget the youthful mistake that could have ruined her reputation. Even though the worst of her indiscretion was kept secret, one other person knows the truth of those dark days: the sarcastic Doctor Jonas Grantham. She wants nothing to do with him…or the butterflies that take flight in her stomach every time he looks her way.

Jonas Grantham has a secret, too: He’s been in love with Lydia for more than a year. This winter, he’s determined to conquer her dislike and win her for his own. It all starts with a wager and a kiss…

My Review

This story is a short novella, about 100 pages, so it was easy to breeze right through, and with Milan at the helm of this story, you have quite a ride of romance and tension and yummy treats. Jonas Grantham met Lydia when she was a teenager, and having been a student of medicine at the time, couldn’t help her when some mistakes came to light, but now he loves her. He loves Lydia, and she hates him, but he is bound to win her over and with the magic of the season, he will use any weapon at his disposal. Lydia has a secret that if found out could destroy her, and only two people know: her father and Jonas, but will Lydia and Jonas be able to overcome fears and hurts and find true love?

What I enjoyed about this story was the chemistry between Jonas and Lydia. At first, they tend to argue and bicker like little children, but when you really press on further into the story, we see a romance blossom between the two, and I enjoyed the light hearted tone of the story. It wasn’t very serious and set off a feeling of sweet fun. It a easy read, and can be read as a stand alone, I do love stories like this one. You have two people that need each other, and Jonas’s life hasn’t been easy either, but he is wonderful with Lydia, and really brings her real nature out and they have quite a connection. I want to tip my hat to Milan for writing a novella that is packed with strong characters, a story with depth and a love story to enchant. A perfect read for the season…get ready for a witty and fun romance.

Synopsis

Sometimes love is an accident.

This time, it’s a strategy.

Miss Minerva Lane is a quiet, bespectacled wallflower, and she wants to keep it that way. After all, the last time she was the center of attention, it ended badly–so badly that she changed her name to escape her scandalous past. Wallflowers may not be the prettiest of blooms, but at least they don’t get trampled. So when a handsome duke comes to town, the last thing she wants is his attention.

But that is precisely what she gets.

Because Robert Blaisdell, the Duke of Clermont, is not fooled. When Minnie figures out what he’s up to, he realizes there is more to than her spectacles and her quiet ways. And he’s determined to lay her every secret bare before she can discover his. But this time, one shy miss may prove to be more than his match…

My Review

For quite some time now I have seen plenty of high rating and reviews, and recommendations from fellow bloggers and friends about this series, and I kept putting it off. But as I was browsing I saw that The Duchess War, was free, so I thought I should start reading it. This is not the first time that I have read this author, but I haven’t read her in quite some time. I do love wallflower themed romances, but this story had so much more depth that I was expecting.

The story begins with Minerva Lane, who finds herself hiding behind a couch, when her almost fiancee comes in with his friends, talking crap about her, and she finds herself with a partner listening in, Robert Blaisdell, who she later learns is a bloody Duke. Can her day get any worse? Minerva has been hiding her true identity for years, and now she has no choice but to marry, because the only family she has left, two women that practically adopted her into their lives, friends of her mother, are left in dire straits, and she needs to marry and soon. But when Robert enters her life, and begins to pursue her, she starts to want a better way for her life, and not just marrying someone for convenience. And soon she starts to realize that there is alot more to Robert than meets the eye, and she will have to decide if she could handle being the Duchess of Clermont, or will her inner fears from her past consume her?

What I loved about this story was the emotional intensity that is displayed throughout the story. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed this authors style, that pulled me right into the story from the beginning. What I liked at the start was how Robert and Minnie got along with each. There was quite a bit of fun interaction, and it was a show seeing these two rub along together, and try to work things out, with a bit of heated and strongly sensual scenes that could fire up the room. There definitely is plenty of sparks flying back in forth between the two. Another characteristic that I really enjoyed was the building up of the characters. We see quite a bit of development of both Minnie and Robert. The kind that really capture you attention, and I fell in love with both Minnie and Robert. They were such a pair, and I couldn’t get enough of them and the kind of attachment that they form to each other.

Robert is ….well I loved him as the hero, he really got my radar up and working furiously, there was something so telling about him that made me just want to marry the man myself. Robert isn’t looking for a conventional marriage, he is quite a schemer, but in a good way. He has secrets of his own, but he goes about doing things that he knows he can get away with because he is a Duke. Robert never grew up with parents that loved him, he has never really known love or affection, until the arrival of his brother and cousin come into his life. He hasn’t had a easy road, but is determined to make a difference in his life. Minnie, grew up in a situation that was not her own, and has her own talents and is way intelligent, but has had to settle for less because of the secret that she is afraid of coming out. What match that these two were for each other. They may have different types of history, and status in society, but they work so good together and really balance each other really well.

I found that The Duchess War was a fascinating story of healing, past hurts, and a poignant love to win every heart….SENSUAL AND WELL PLAYED OUT!!

Favorite Quotes

His voice dropped to a low murmur, and he leaned down so that he was almost whispering in her ear. “You see, there’s this woman.”
She wasn’t going to look at him. She wasn’t.
“Normally, one might say that there was a beautiful woman—but I don’t think she qualifies as a classical beauty. Still, I find that when she’s around, I’d rather look at her than anyone else.”
He set two fingers against her cheek, and Minnie sucked in a breath. She was not going to look at him. He’d see the longing in her eyes, and then…
“There’s something about her that draws my eye. Something that defies words. Maybe it’s her hair, but I tried to tell her that, and she told me I was being ridiculous. I suppose I was. Maybe it’s her lips. Maybe it’s her eyes, although she so rarely looks at me.”

“I want you. I want you very badly. I want you so much that when you fall down half a hall away from me, I’m by your side before anyone else can move. I want you so much that there are nights that I think of nothing but having you.”

He has changed so much, but the passion she feels for him is rekindled, and she doesn’t know if she can or will deny it…

My Thoughts
I have to say I am truly enjoying this author…way too much. There is just something about her books that keeps you reading. When I first read the blurb for this story, I wasn’t too overly excited to read it. However I had a feeling I would enjoy it, and did I ever. I am so glad I listen to that sixth sense at times. There were so many aspects of the story that I just fell in love with. The first one would be the plot….it was such a engaging plot that was full of excitement and enough mystery to almost give me a heart attack. There were a few twists and turns throughout the story that made me always wonder ‘What Would Be Happening Next? ‘ I was always being surprised at different intervals that just kept me involved in the story. I found that I truly enjoyed the characters quite a bit. Maybe more than the first book. Ned is the type of hero that one doesn’t see too often, but you are always pleased when it does. I probably wouldn’t put him in the alpha male category, more like beta male. He will fight for what he wants, but isn’t too domineering or controlling. You can see what a gentle man he is, although he can certainly be protective when its needed. I also enjoyed Kate, whose secret life just made me grin the whole time I was reading it. Kate is very caring and would sacrifice herself to help another. I really loved seeing Ned and Kate interact with each other, since they definitely have different backgrounds in a way that keeps their relationship very interesting. A Lovely written story that will tug at those heartstrings!

My Favorite Quote
“Before he could think better of it,  he leaned down  and touched his lips to hers. She was soft and for all the murky complications of his own lust, the kiss he gave her was as simple and unshadowed as a summer noon. She tasted of warm sunshine and soft breezes. “

My Review
Summary
Jenny, is a fortune teller, and has a sophisticated clientele. When one of her regular clients, Ned, comes to her to convince his cousin of her authenticity. Gareth is a man of science, and ever since he came into his title, he has had to bear the weight of his title and all the responsibilities. Ned is young and innocent enough to be taken advantage of. When he hears about “Madame Esmerelda” he plans to discredit her, because he knows she is deceiving his cousin. At first he challenge her, and she in return challenges him back, and he finds her spirited and lovely and finds her irresistable and can’t wait to get her into his bed. However he doesn’t plan on ever falling in love….especially with a woman that matches him in all the ways that matter.

The Hero  (Gareth Carhart)
Gareth, Lord Blakely has a passion for the scienes. And on the outside may seem cold and withdrawn but craves companionship and hates the feeling of loneliness. However he doesn’t fully realize it until he meets Jenny, who turns his world of order into a world of chaos. He knows she is far different from him, but from the first time she spars with him, his desire for her encompasses him and it takes all his effort to keep his self control in check and not make passionate love to her for days on end.

The Hero (Jenny Keeble)
Jenny, is a fortune teller, which is not as easy as it looks. Jenny has worked hard over the years, for her reputation. She depends on her regular clientele in order to survive here in London.  Now Lord Blakely is threatening to ruin everything, including her friendship with his cousin, who is like family to her. The only person that has ever shown kindness to her. But Gareth is very different, he makes her feel alive for the first time in her life, and finds herself falling in love with her.

My Thoughts
Proof By Seduction is the second in the series, and I now wonder why I haven’t read more from this author before now. Milan has a very unique style of writing, one that instantly draws the reader instantly into the story. From the first sentance in the story I was hooked. I loved how from the first couple of pages, we see the first meeting of Gareth and Jenny. I have to say I found myself cracking up seeing them interact, it was like witnessing a sparring match, only verbally. I love the witty characteristics that played out throughout the story, and how you see these two people fall in love who may seem different in the beginning, are perfect for each other. I also loved the creativity of this author, and some of the scenes were definitely not commonplace. Overall a creatively written and fun story filled with endearing characters, engaging plot and intensely romantic that will make you shed a tear or two.

My Favorite Quote
“I’m not an automaton”
The thoughts of her mouth against his snuffed what little guttering intellect remained to him. Her flesh seemed to sizzle beneath his fingertips. He lowered his head to her lips until her lips were a tantalizing inch from his.
“Most of all I’ll be damned if I let you call me dispassionate”
