New York Times bestselling author Karen Ranney’s first novel in a brand-new series spins the intriguing story of a beautiful widow and a devilishly handsome shipbuilder…

Seven years have passed since Glynis MacIain made the foolish mistake of declaring her love to Lennox Cameron, only to have him stare at her dumbfounded. Heartbroken, she accepted the proposal of a diplomat and moved to America, where she played the role of a dutiful wife among Washington’s elite. Now a widow, Glynis is back in Scotland. Though Lennox can still unravel her with just one glance, Glynis is no longer the naïve girl Lennox knew and vows to resist him.

With the American Civil War raging, shipbuilder Lennox Cameron must complete a sleek new blockade runner for the Confederate Navy. He cannot afford any distractions, especially the one woman he’s always loved. Glynis’s cool demeanor tempts him to prove to her what a terrible mistake she made seven years ago.

As the war casts its long shadow across the ocean, will a secret from Glynis’s past destroy any chance for a future between the two star-crossed lovers?

My Review

Glynis Maclain once loved Lennox Cameron, but when he didn’t return her love, she married

someone else and left her home, and went to America, and her life changed forever. She is now a widow, and has finally returned to her home, to her family, but she is determined to not let Lennox break her heart again. Lennox is a shipbuilder, and very successful, but has never married, because there has only been one woman who has held his heart…Glynis. Now that she has returned, a widow, he is bound to show her what they can be together, but only if Glynis will let go of past hurts and betrayals and open herself up for love again…

What I loved most? Everything…hehe I know I know…but I truly loved this one, and what a great beginning to a new series. I really can’t tell you the exact name of the series yet, since that has yet to be revealed, so I have just guessed that it is about “Scottish Dreams” and the second book comes out this spring, which I am very excited about. Karen Ranney is such a wonderful author, and her talent in creating romances is beyond superb. As I am sure you know, Ranney writes her books centered on a Highlander theme, and this book is more in the Regency era. We also see aspects of the civil war, and I loved having that aspect. Its not a major element to the plot, but the certain qualities of it add a certain depth to the story you don’t expect to see. And the supposed villain, kinda turns out to be not what you really expect, and I loved seeing the varying aspects that combine this one into a winning romance that won my attention from beginning to end.
The characters in this story are truly unique and I found their personalities to compliment the plot really well and in ways that surprised me. Lennox Cameron, is quite successful and goes after what he wants. He is a fabulous hero, but I felt like the story focused more on Glynis than it did on Lennox. We see more inside depth on her character, and of her past a bit, and how her previous marriage changed her, but what I also liked is how this story really implements the self discovery of herself even more than you expect, and I liked seeing her inner strength show more, and we see how she is a great match for Lennox. Even though we don’t see as much of his character as we do of Glynis, we do see his struggles a bit, and how their personalities really mesh together in a way that is just wonderful.
This love story is quite a winner for me, I had so much fun with these two, and boy do they know how to add conflict to their relationsip, and they don’t make it easy on themselves and just admit their feelings to each other…oh no they have to do this long mating ritual, but the final outcome is definitely worth the wait. Overall I enjoyed how the different elements of the story come together in the end, for a full satisfying read that will captivate you. A STELLAR ROMANCE!!
Excerpt

His chuckle annoyed her because he wasn’t fast enough. She put both hands on either side of the placket of his shirt and pulled, feeling the buttons give. She scratched his skin, stretched her arms around until she felt his back, fingers splayed to feel all of him. It wasn’t enough.
Her breasts pressed against the hard planes of his chest as her hands wrapped around his neck.
She blinked open her eyes to find him smiling down at her, his gaze intent.
She only smiled back at him and rained kisses over his chest.
His indrawn breath made her want to laugh. Good, let him feel a fraction of the wildness racing through her.
She grabbed his head and held him still for her kiss, wishing he could erase all the loneliness of the past years. She wanted to pull off his clothes, tear them if she must, do something improper and wanton. She was not herself, but that was a lie, wasn’t it?
This was the woman who’d always been tamped down, pushed to the back, and ignored. Richard had never seen this creature. The only person who ever really knew her was Lennox.
She wanted him in a way she’d never wanted any other man. He was hers and he had always been hers since she was a child and first saw him.
His clothes were too concealing for this summer night with its warm air and soft scented breeze.
A tide was rushing in to nearly drown her.
She needed her clothes off. She was too hot, too constrained.
If she’d felt any modesty before he arrived, it was gone now, buried beneath a need racing through her like lightning.
His lips on her throat accelerated her pulse even further. She shivered, gripping his shoulders as he unfastened the bow holding her nightgown closed.
Her knees weakened as he pushed the garment open. His fingers danced across her skin, hesitated at the top of her breasts.
“Yes,” she whispered. Yes, oh yes.

Synopsis

A Lord Not Meant to Marry

Hamish MacRae, a changed man, returned to his beloved Scotland intending to turn his back on the world. The proud, brooding lord wants nothing more than to be left alone, but an unwanted visitor to his lonely castle has defied his wishes. While it is true that this healer, Mary Gilly, is a beauty beyond compare, it will take more than her miraculous potions to soothe his wounded spirit. But Mary’s tender heart is slowly melting Hamish’s frozen one… awakening a burning need to keep her with him—forever.

A Lady Who Dares Not Love

Never before has Mary felt such an attraction to a man! The mysterious Hamish MacRae is strong and commanding, with a face and form so handsome it makes Mary tremble with wanting him. Already shadowy forces are coming closer, heartless whispers and cruel rumors abound, and it will take a love more pure and powerful than any other to divine the truth—and promise a future neither had dreamed possible.

My Review

Mary Gilly, is a healer, and has been studying medicine most of her life. Mary is a widow, and she MacRae and help him with his injuries. Hamish MacRae has suffered torture and is scarred both inside and out, and enjoys his solitude. The last thing that he needs is a interfering brother and a healer, he just wants to be left alone. But Mary is more stubborn than he gave her credit for, and soon tensions rise, passions build and Hamish and Mary can’t deny the desire that they feel for each other. Both of them know that they are only together for a few weeks and to make the best of it, but both Mary and Hamish need each other, and not just to make passionate love to each other. And there is a enemy that could tear them apart forever…
has been asked to come to Hamish

What a fun and sexy highlander romance. I had so much fun with this one. I just adore Karen Ranney and she always delivers amazing stories, and To Love A Scottish Lord is no different. In this installment, we have the fourth book in the series, I have read other books in the series but it has been a long time since I have read a book involving the MacRae’s and boy I see I need to get back to this series. The brothers are just awesome together, and I just adored the closeness of the family. The story is mostly centered around Mary and Hamish, and the adventures they have together and them exploring the desire they share for each other. This pair was quite unique, and I loved the element of these two accepting each other and not feeling any reluctance to just enjoy the moment in each other. Most romances you see the whole courting dance before they get to the bedroom, but in this one, that doesn’t really happen, it definitely had a different feel to the story and I really liked how this author adds some unique elements that adds a flair to the tale we have here.

Overall I had fun with this one, and this author keeps me coming back for more. If you are looking for a fun romance, with sexy playful scenes, a hero to curl you toes, a heroine to delight in, and a tale of passion and a endearing story to keep you aching for more….a rich gem to take to your heart!!

Synopsis
The third sizzling romance in New York Times bestselling author Karen Ranney’s Clan Sinclair series…

Ellice Traylor has a secret. Beneath her innocent exterior beats an incredibly passionate and imaginative heart. She has been pouring all of her frustrated virginal fantasies into a scandalous manuscript. But when her plans for her future are about to be derailed by her mother’s matrimonial designs, she takes matters into her own hands.

Ross Forster, the Earl of Gladsden, has spent his life creating order out of chaos. He expects discipline and calm from those around him. What he does not expect is a beautiful, thoroughly maddening stowaway in his carriage.

But when Ross discovers Ellice’s secret book, he finds he can’t stop thinking about what other fantasies the disarming virgin can dream up. He has the chance to learn when a compromising position forces them to wed. But can the uptight Earl survive a life with his surprising new wife? And how will the hero of Ellice’s fantasies compare to the husband of her reality?

My Review

Ellice has devoted hard work and dedication to writing a book, and one of a more sensual nature, and is determined to see that it is published. When her mother informs her that she would like to start seeing her set about in Scotland’s Society, she is determined to escape, anything from marrying someone she doesn’t love. She she hides in a carriage, hoping that its heading for Edinburgh, but then the handsome stranger, he decides to stay overnight, because of a horrid storm front approaching. So she finds herself with cobwebs in her hair, and trying to escape unnoticed, when Ross shows up right in front of her, demanding to know who she is thinking she is some servant making mischief, when she is the sister of the Macrath Sinclair. Both Ross and Ellice end up working together to save a village when its about to flood, and passions ignite, and desire flames between them, and when a scandal threatens, will Ross and Ellice be able to give into the love that is waiting just around the corner for them to grasp and take hold?

the Virgin Of Clan Sinclair is the third book in this Clan Sinclair series, and its probably my favorite book!!! Oh boy did I adore this one, I stayed up super late last night, so I could finish it, and its been a while since a story has done that for me. There was just so many things I loved about this installment, and I just hope that I can cover everything without spoiling the story too much for you folks!! 🙂 So this heroine, Ellice, she has spunk. What didn’t I love about her? nothing, I adored her character, and the personality that is just so heartwarming and infectious and utterly captivating. She is exactly what you are looking for in a solid heroine character. Ellice has a creative side, and despite writing a sensual work of art, she is a virgin and has zero experience when it comes to making love. However she does have quite a imagination, and I loved how this author added a few snippets that were so addicting that I just wanted more. Ellice knows that she won’t settle for anything less than passion and love. She sees what her brother has and craves it for herself. She is very independent, sweet, and fun loving. Now the hero….sexy Scot, who wears a kilt at times, and takes up the steam level a few notches. He is sensuality personified. He is alpha, likes to be obeyed, and refuses to answer questions unless he wants to. I loved how determined he is, and I wouldn’t mind having this man at my side any day of the year.

Their relationship was fun and playful at times, and others very intense. I loved the variations in the story that just kept me engaged, and at the same time keeping me flipping through those pages as soon as I had read them. The story just came alive with stunning scenes, heart wrenching characters, and a story that stole my breath and tugged at those heart strings. Emotionally riveting from beginning to end, a romance that I never wanted to end!!! A enticing mixture of passion, witty humor, and adventure. SIMPLY MAGICAL!!! I just dare you to pick this one up and NOT adore it!!

Synopsis
The next sizzling romance in New York Times bestselling author Karen Ranney’s Clan Sinclair series…

Logan Harrison is looking for a wife. As the Lord Provost of Edinburgh, he needs a conventional and diplomatic woman who will stand by his side and help further his political ambitions. He most certainly does not need Mairi Sinclair, the fiery, passionate, fiercely beautiful woman who tries to thwart him at every turn. But if she’s so wrong for him, why can’t he stop kissing her? He is completely bewitched.

Mairi Sinclair has never met anyone like Logan Harrison, the perfect example of everything she finds wrong with the world. He’s also incredibly handsome, immensely popular, and impossible to resist. His kisses inflame her and awaken a passion she can barely control.

Can two people who are at such odds admit to a love that would bind them together for life?

My Review
I received a ARC copy in exchange of a honest review.

Mairi Sinclair is a very independent and strong willed, and when she goes to hear a lecture that only “men” are allowed to see she is outraged. She then meets Logan Harrison, who is temptation itself, but even he refuses her entry. So she declares war on the Lord Provost, which is practically suicidal considering practically everyone in the city of Edinburgh worships the ground he walks on. Mairi is editor of a newspaper, and practically has spent years building up its reputation hiding herself behind her brothers name. Now she is determined to see that women get the same rights as the men including the right to vote. Logan Harrison is on a hunt for a wife, someone that would be a advantage for his career, and could be be diplomatic, but all thoughts of a wife go out the window when he meets this fiery temptress that makes him want to kiss her soundless. Mairi and Logan are verbal enemies, but are magic in the bedchamber, and soon will either be able to resist the love that is just waiting for them to embrace?

The Witch of Clan Sinclair is the second installment in this most recent series by Karen Ranney. I haven’t read a ton of her books, but every time I have read her I have fallen in love with every one of her stories. Plus I really loved this cover, so gorgeous, don’t you agree? I have enjoyed the setting of this latest series of the Clan Sinclair. It is set more in the regency period, but is set in Scotland which I can’t resist. I have a fascination with the country and its people. The year is 1872, and it begins with seeing a instant connection between Mairi and Logan. From the first chapter there are sparks in the air, without either of them talking much. I love the way these two are connected from the beginning. I felt like the story picks up quickly from the beginning, which is refreshing since that doesn’t happen too often, especially with historical romances. However with this story I felt like the story started off with a quick pace that compels the reader to read more.

The plot was ongoing, and didn’t seem to slow down much. Although there were periods where I felt the steadiness of the story took stops, and I felt like the flow of the story could have been a bit more consistent. I felt like a yo yo at times, and at times I was fully into the story and a couple other times I would have to force myself to keep reading. I don’t know if it was just me or the way the story was written, but I couldn’t have a full grasp on the story as I would have liked. I will say I thoroughly loved this story and it was fun seeing characters from the first book as well.

The characters in the story were so different from each other, but in the end they matched perfectly. Logan is a politician, and is out to further his ambitions in the political arena. Logan is much loved by the people because of some reforms he has set to accomplish, but he never has thought about women’s rights, he just figures they are content to marry and have many babies right? Mairi has a brother that has always encouraged her to go after her dreams. She has spent more time and effort on the newspaper than anything else. It is her passion and she loves writing and sharing ideas with others. From the moment she meets Logan she realizes that she wants to focus her energy and time now to women’s rights. When she practically attacks Logan in written form, her newspaper takes the brunt and soon she starts to realize how sensitive this subject is. Mairi goes about things with full purpose and full speed without thinking things through. At times I loved how rash she is and how passionate she can be with her ideas, which tends to get her into trouble. Logan is more logical and rational, but he can’t resist his attraction to Mairi. Their relationship is full of strife and struggles, and plenty of verbal wars. At the same time we see how much these two care for each other, and as you progress more into the story you see how they compliment each other, in ways that only cement their relationship.

Overall a fun and witty historical romance that won my heart from the very beginning. This author has created a story full of zest and passion and a tale to steal your heart!!! MAGNIFICENT!!

Synopsis
For Virginia Traylor, Countess of Barrett, marriage was merely the vehicle to buy her father a title. Widowhood, however, brings a host of problems. For her husband deliberately spent the money intended for Virginia and her in-laws, leaving them penniless—unless she produces an heir. Desperate and confused, Virginia embarks on a fateful journey that brings her to the doorstep of the only man she’s ever loved…

He’s known as The Devil, but Macrath Sinclair doesn’t care. He moved to a tiny Scottish village in hopes of continuing his work as an inventor and starting a family of his own. He bought the house; he chose the woman. Unfortunately, Virginia didn’t choose him. Macrath knows he should turn her away now, but she needs him, and he wants her more than ever. Whatever game Virginia’s playing, Macrath intends to win—one wickedly seductive deed at a time..

My Review

I have really enjoyed this author over the years, and even though I haven’t read too many of her books, I was very delighted to get a chance to get a copy of this ARC through Avon and Edelweiss. I think out of all of books I have had the pleasure of reading from this author, this one would be at the top of my list. I would recommend it to anyone, it does have a bit of betrayal and distrust between the couple especially with how they began. However I found that from beginning to end I was entertained and there wasn’t one moment of boredom. I could honestly conduct a hour or two long conversation about this book, but I wont take that long LOL

It begins with when they first fall in love, they start to slowly court, and their relationship is sweet and tender and innocent. Virginia is a American, and has come to England with her father to find a husband. Macrath has worked hard his whole life to get as accomplished as he is now. When Virginia’s father demands that she marry a Count, she realizes that she will have to give up the man she loves. A year later  Virginia has just recently become a widow, and according to her mother in law, she must get pregnant immediately. Knowing she has no other choice, she decides to go up to Scotland to find Macrath, and seduce him. Virginia’s feelings for him coming washing back the moment she is back in his arms and then leaves him again. Macrath isn’t one to be used, or to give his heart twice to the same woman. So he decided to leave for a while, and heads down to Australia for a year. When he returns he decides to visit Virginia on a impulse, but he finds that she is barely recovering from a deathly sickness, and finds out that he has a son, that she never told him about. So deciding to turn the table on her, and before Virginia knows it she is chasing after Macrath, only to find herself in a situation where she could lose herself in him, and doesn’t know if she could have the strength to leave or stay with him forever.

The Devil of Clan Sinclair is quite a sensational story that swept me off my feet. I loved how their sweet romance turns into a vital love story where the focus is about the love that lasts. This couple goes through quite a bit of hurdles, and at first I didn’t like Virginia, I had a hard time getting used to her character. She seemed to me to be the type that would be not willing to fight for who you love. She seems to be lacking some spine, she could have been a bit more bolder. However I had no issues with Macrath, he never gave up on Virginia no matter how much she hurt him. I loved his strength and perseverance. In the end though, I enjoyed seeing how the story plays out, and it ended up be a endearing story that won my heart over in the end!! A story I would recommend to anyone that enjoys a sensually filled romance that is bound to endear you.

Synopsis
Shona Imrie should have agreed to Gordon MacDermond’s proposal of marriage seven years ago — before he went off to war and returned a national hero — but the proud Scottish lass would accept no man’s charity. The dashing soldier would never truly share her love and the passion that left her weak and breathless — or so she believed — so instead she gave herself to another. Now she faces disgrace, poverty, and a life spent alone for her steadfast refusal to follow her heart.

Honored with a baronetcy for his courage under fire, Gordon has everything he could ever want — except for the one thing he most fervently desires: the headstrong beauty he foolishly let slip through his fingers. Conquering Shona’s stubborn pride, however, will prove his most difficult battle — though it is the one for which he is most willing to risk his life, his heart, and his soul.

My Review

Summary
Shona once fell in love with Gordon over seven years ago, but had to turn down his proposal of marriage, even though she cared for him deeply. Now seven years later, she is a widow and her brother has returned from the war injured, with very little money. She knows she has no choice but to sell their ancestral home, to some American’s who are willing to buy it from them. It will be the only thing that will save them from starvation. When she travels to their home, Gairloch, it is unexpected to find Gordon around much more than she ever anticipated. With a huge job of restoring Gairloch to its former glory with only a week before the American’s arrive, she has little time. But there is a passion just waiting to break free, a passion that makes her dream of things she knows will never come to pass. Gordon, has just returned from the war, granted a Baroncy, and resigned from the military planning on starting a new life for himself. He just never thought that Shona would tempt him to love again, or desire a life with her, even though he knows she will more than likely reject him once again….but can he prove to her that their love is more powerful than fear or doubt?

The Hero (Gordon MacDermond)
Gordon, has always loved Shona. Seven years ago, he wanted to marry her but she refused him, only to shortly thereafter marry another man much older than herself. Gordon then joined the military and became a office and war hero. Recently been given a baroncy and has resigned from the military, wanting more from his life than pain and death. He knows that Shona blames him for her brother’s injury, but no more than he blames himself. When it becomes apparent that Shona is in dire straits, he is determined to show he is just the man for her.

The Heroine (Shona Imrie)
Shona is in dire straits, she is a inch from being on the streets and starving. The only thing that will save her and her brother is to sell their family home. She knows that she has no other choice. She once loved Gordon, but she knew she could never marry him, knowing that her financial circumstances would never allow it. So she married another man, but now he is dead, and she has barely survived the past two years making do with no money, and selling off mostly everything she owns. When Gordon comes into her life again, he tempts her and she fears that she will weaken and fall in love with him.

My Thoughts
I haven’t read Karen Ranney in quite some time, I don’t know why though, I always enjoy her stories. A Scottish Love was a very enjoyable and relax into type of book. It was easy to get involved with the story, there wasn’t a hardship in following along, or keeping interested. It was a well written story with such flair that it had me at my fullest attention. It may not be a favorite read, but it was a very good one that I felt like it had me from the first page. There was quite a bit of conflict involved with this couple. They both have a past with each other, which is none too pretty. There is quite a bit of drama at times, but not too much to have you running away. Just enough to keep you wanting to read more. I found I liked Gordon much more than Shona. Sometimes I like the heroine more than the hero, but not in this case. I found Shona to be a bit of a coward at times, not willing to fight for what she wants most. I think she could have had more spine that she did in this story. She is like this for about 90 % of the story, she doesn’t get courage until the end. Gordon on the other hand I adored with every fiber of my being. He is sexy, strong, a fighter, passionate and the kind you want by your side. He is the epitome of pure male and with some Scot tendacies—he is more than delicious…he is a gourmet meal with desert included. I couldn’t get enough of him. It was also fun to see a small love story involving the Shona’s brother as well, its always great when we see a development of other characters in the story too. Definitely a story worthy of your time, one that will evoke emotion and the senses. One you don’t want to miss out on! So if you like a beautiful setting in the Scottish Highlands, a sexy hero, and a plot that will leave you breathless…this one is for you!!!

First Line
Gordon MacDermond was standing at the door of her parlor.

Favorite Quote
“You can live without love. But it’s like color or flavor or music. It makes life something better, something worth experiencing.”
She glanced back at him. “And that’s what I was? Color or flavor or music?”
He thought of those years, his smile fading. “You were a rainbow,” He said “A feast. A Symphony.”

My Thoughts
A Highland Duchess is the most recent book from Karen Ranney. As far as romances go, this was a average read for me. I could get into the story, but it wasn’t like I couldn’t put it down, I actually ended up pausing multiple times through the story. It wasn’t a enlightening read or enchanting, but there was a drama about the story that held a certain appeal for me. I have usually enjoyed reading books from this author, so I was surprised when I had such a challenging time getting through this one. I found that there wasn’t much consistency of engaging the reader much. The story had some flow, but it could be erratic at times. I did enjoy the characters and the emotional side of the story. There were parts of the story that drew me, but there were other parts, where I had to force myself to read through it. Overall it was a enjoyable read, but not one I would want to buy or re read….

My Favorite Quote
“I may be a pariah, Ian, but I would also be a partner. I would be there to listen to you complain, to hear your theories, to tell you that you’re marvelous”
