They say that opposites attract. But what happens when one has been devastated by betrayal and the other is so jaded that his heart is made of stone? Enter the world of Friday Harbor, an enchanting town in the Pacific Northwest where things are not quite as they seem and where true love might just have a ghost of a chance….

Alex Nolan is as bitter and cynical as they come. One of the three Nolan brothers who call Friday harbor home, he’s nothing like Sam or Mark. They actually believe in love; they think the risk of pain is worth the chance of happiness. But Alex battles his demons with the help of a whiskey bottle, and he lives in his own private hell. And then a ghost shows up. Only Alex can see him, Has Alex finally crossed over the threshold to insanity?

Zoë Hoffman is as gentle and romantic as they come. When she meets the startling gorgeous Alex Nolan, all her instincts tell her to run. Even Alex tells her to run. But something in him calls to Zoë, and she forces him to take a look at his life with a clear eye and to open his mind to the possibility that love isn’t for the foolish.

The ghost has been existing in the half-light of this world for decades. He doesn’t know who he is, or why he is stuck in the Nolans’ Victorian house. All he knows is that he loved a girl once. And Alex and Zoë hold the key to unlocking a mystery that keeps him trapped here.

Zoë and Alex are oil and water, fire and ice, sunshine and shadow. But sometimes it takes only a glimmer of light to chase away the dark, and sometimes love can reach beyond time, space, and reason to take hold of hearts that yearn for it…

My Review
Summary
Alex is the most bitter of the three brothers, even though the youngest, he is the least carefree and can be very cynical about his life. When he first married, he knew that she would never be a woman he could care about. So when she wanted a divorce, it came to no surprise to Alex. What he didn’t like was having her take everything from him in the financial aspect. But then he takes a job repairing a cottage for Zoe Hoffman. Zoe was raised by her grandmother most of her life. When her mother left her and her father when she was little, her father left as well, and had her grandmother raise her. Zoe has felt like the only person to truly care for her are her closest friends and her grandmother. When she hears that her grandmother has a certain condition that is similar to all timers, only worse, she knows she would rather have her grandmother by her side, and taking care of her. So she asks for Alex’s help repairing a old cottage that belongs to their family. Alex can’t force himself to stop drinking for one moment, it is the only things that makes him forget the mess of his life. When a certain ghost starts haunting him and following him everywhere, he wonders if he is really crazy. The ghost has been existing for centuries, but Alex is the first mortal to see him, so he knows it is up to him to help Alex and himself as well. When Zoe first meets Alex, she knows he is the worst man for her. She knows it, and Alex knows it, but that doesn’t stop the sizzling attraction that only builds the more they are near each other. But sometimes love surprises you when you least expect it.

My Thoughts
This is one of those series I had the misfortune of reading out of order. Now I will say you can read it out of order, but I always prefer to read Kleypas’ series in order if possible. I felt like Dream Lake and Rainshadow Road could probably be read at the same time, since they both occur around the same time. After reading Crystal Cove, I was a bit apprehensive about reading this one, I mean I knew I would most likely enjoy it. But I have felt with this series, it doesn’t have the same spark as with her other books. However I can occasionally be wrong (I know, a impossibility right?) Well I absolutely loved this one.

It begins with seeing Alex come to Friday Harbor, and starts living with his brother Sam. It starts off with Alex first hearing of his wife desiring a divorce, and this is where he starts drinking enough alcohol to kill ya in a week. Drinking is pretty much all that he does for quite some time, until he meets Zoe. Now Zoe is the type of girl to even go for the Alex Type. She wants love, devotion and passion. Alex knows that Zoe is one the most beautiful women he has ever laid his eyes on, but he feels he would just ruin her goodness. So he endeavors to try to stay as far from her as he possibly can. Well Zoe is a bit stubborn and she knows that even though nothing real could come from a relationship with Alex, she has never felt such a strong connection with anyone. Then we have the ghost enter the scene. He first is at Sam’s house, but when he notices Alex he is able to go where he goes, and Alex for some odd reason can see this ghost,  when no one else can. Alex knows that he and Zoe are as different as oil and water, but he can’t deny his attraction to her, and at first its just sex to him. But as he truly see Zoe for who she really is, he starts to soften, and desires the whole kit and caboodle—love, passion, marriage and a family.

I found Alex to be the normal type of hero that Kleypas has in her books-at least for the most part. He is a bit self destructive, way too cynical, especially for Zoe–who is beyond sweet and gentle. Not his type, but opposites do attract. These two may be so different from each other, but they are attracted to each other like a moth to flame. Zoe is tender hearted and vulnerable at times, but I liked seeing these two interact, and how Alex doesn’t take advantage of her( even though you kinda expect him to at some point). There are so many small layers to this couple, and as you get further into the book, you scrape more through the layers, and there is so much depth at times.

I found Dream Lake to be a truly wonderful and fully satisfying read, that when you are finished (you have the kind of feeling of “Well Done”). I truly admired this couple, and all the hurdles they had to cross, and there were a surprise here and there, that keeps the reader on their toes. There is no predictable situations, its all written in a certain way, it holds your attention from the beginning. Deep emotions, sweet magical story, and richly developed that its better than a box of chocolates. (And I am a lover of chocolate) Full of witty humor, a riveting story, purely enchanting!!!

Favorite Quotes
“All you need to know is that I don’t make love to women, I use them. To you, sex is about kindness, honesty, commitment…well, I don’t bring any of that to bed. If you’re as smart as I think you are, you’ll believe that.”
“I do,” Zoe said promptly
“Really?”
“Yes.” But after a long hesitation, Zoe’s gaze dropped and the corners of her mouth quirked. “No,” she admitted, “I really don’t.”
“Damn it, Zoe–” He broke off in frustration , all the more provoked because she was trying not to smile, as if she thought him as some big pussycat trying to pose as a tiger. The hint of amusement flitting across her lips drove him crazy. Before he knew what he was doing, he crushed his mouth over hers, holding her head so she couldn’t jerk back. She tasted like lavender sugar. Sweet, dark-flowering kisses, opening in a way that focused all his senses on this one moment, this one blinding perception of pleasure.

“Because one day of something wonderful is better than a forever of nothing special.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“I know. But I hate weddings.”
“Because of Darcy?”
“Because a wedding is a ceremony where a symbolic virgin surrounded by women in ugly dresses marries a hungover groom accompanied by
friends he hasn’t seen in years but made them show up anyway. After that, there’s a reception where the guests are held hostage for two hours with
nothing to eat except lukewarm chicken winglets or those weird coated almonds, and the DJ tries to brainwash everyone into doing the electric
slide and the Macarena, which some drunk idiots always go for. The only good part about a wedding is the free booze.”
“Can you say that again?” Sam asked. “Because I might want to write it down and use it as part of my speech.”
My Thoughts
I saw Crystal Cove on the shelf at my local library…and I almost went into shock since this one just came out a couple months ago. And usually with such a popular author, it would take 3-4 months before I would be able to get my hands on this. Normally I would have wanted to read Dream Lake first, but I take books when they are available, so I was hoping I wouldn’t be too lost when I started to read this. As a fan of Lisa Kleypas there hasn’t been a book of hers that I haven’t liked. There were quite a few things that I liked about this book, a few things that I didn’t like. But overall I totally learned to love this story. Jason, is definitely ALPHA WOW Male LOL, he is deliciously yummy, but needs to be in control of every situation. Although the way he is with Justine was almost priceless. He is the type where everyone jumps to attention whenever he is around, but Justine doesn’t. She stands on her own, and doesn’t give in to his every demand =which I really liked about her. Justine has been raised a witch, but doesn’t practice in fully, until she discovers her curse. Justine craves a real relationship and being able to find someone to love. After she meets Jason, his life is so different from hers, but she feels a connection to him, where she feels able to laugh and play and the ability to open her heart to someone for the first time in her life. The story line was full of everything that makes for a strong story. I found it to have a beautiful magical tone. Now for a couple of things that I didn’t like so much. One is the powerful tone of magic that is shown through this story, the sense of Jason not having a soul–it was a bit disturbing at times. I felt like it just wasn’t Kleypas style in ANY way. The past books in the series, had a lighter tone to magic, but I felt like this book, it was a major element to the story. Which sometimes works, but there was almost something off kilter about it. Second is that there was a certain bed scene that had a bit of bdsm element to it, which was very unexpected and I didn’t really like it. I am not a fan of bdsm at all, and I really didn’t like it in this story. I felt like it was a bit too much for the story and for the author’s style. I know as time progresses, authors style of writing sometimes changes and all, but It just felt like it almost unbalanced the tone of their relationship a bit. Maybe it was just me, but I just felt like it wasn’t fully necessary. However despite a couple of things I didn’t really like, I felt like this story really called out to me in a powerful way. It was very different than the rest of Kleypas’ books. Crystal Cove showed all the romance talent that Lisa Kleypas has the ability of portraying through her stories. Powerfully written, heart breaking characters, sensual love scenes, and a riveting tale with a paranormal element to a contemporary story that has a magical ring to it. A STAR of a read!!!
First Line
It was a safe bet, Justine Hoffman thought glumly, that after ninety nine failed love spells, the hundredth wasn’t going to work any better than the rest.
Favorite Quote
“All I want is to spend a little time with you,” he said gently. “No games. We can talk about anything you want. Or not talk at all. Just you and me in a quiet place with a bottle of wine and maybe some candlelight.” Reading the uncertainty in her gaze, he added huskily, “Don’t say no. Because this has never happened to me before.”
“What hasn’t happened?”
Jason smiled into her puzzled face, a since and unexpectedly charming smile. “I can’t put it into words yet. But it may be as close as I’ll ever get to having a soul.”
My Review
Summary
Lucy, has a talent for creating beautiful glass, and currently resides in Friday Harbor in Washington. She lives with her boyfriend, Kevin, whom she has been with for over two years. Lucy is content with life, and feels as if everything has fallen into place for her; until Kevin lays a bombshell on her. He breaks up with her, at first Lucy doesn’t understand why. It was the last thing that she ever expected Kevin to say to her. But then she finds out he has been cheating on her with her sister, of all people. Lucy has yet to find someone that can love her for who she really is. But then she stumbles across Sam Nolan, who is charismatic and kind and very handsome. Lucy, knowing that he may one day, break her heart, pursues a relationship with him. At first its very slow, and she tries to shield her heart, knowing he can’t even sleep with her at night, he avoids any kind of commitment or love at any given time. But when she feels that she is starting to truly care for Sam, because she has connected with him on such a more intimate level than anyone before now; she knows that what they share can never last, but will Sam be able to live his life without Lucy?
The Hero (Sam Nolan)
Sam, grew up in a home where his parents had the worst marriage possible. They had no idea how to have a healthy relationship, and growing up in that environment made him very cynical and runs whenever a woman wants more than casual sex. Sam went to college, and now has a vineyard, and is working as hard as he can to make it a beautiful and productive. He also has his hands full with his niece, whom along with his brother, have become her new parents (in a way) after their sister dies. When he meets Lucy he is very resistant to starting any kind of relationship with her, because he knows deep down, he could very well lose his heart to her sweet spirit who calls to him.
The Heroine (Lucy Marinn)
Ever since Lucy was a little girl, she has had a fascination with glass. How it was made, and how it turns out so beautiful. She senses something pure and clean about it. She has dedicated her life to pursuing a career to be a glass artist. When Lucy was younger, her other sister got all the attention and was always spoiled and received everything she ever wanted. But Lucy, had to do things for herself, and her parents never came close to spoiling her like her sister. When she learns of the betrayal and that her own boyfriend chose her sister over her, she is devastated. But now desires a life free of the male species until Sam comes along and changes everything.
My Thoughts
After reading Christmas Eve at Friday Harbor, I was very much looking forward to reading Sam’s story. I always felt like he would be the perfect hero for one of Kleypas’s stories. It started out within the first paragraph having me hooked into this story. I could hardly put it down, and read it within a day. I had no trouble staying with the plot and the characters, and I just fell in love with Sam and Lucy. I really liked Lucy, I found her to have some good qualities, but also to have a bit of a vulnerability, that I felt I could relate to. You never want the characters to be so perfect you never feel you can relate with them in any way. I felt like both had a carefree manner about them. Sam is just….HOT…that is all I have to say. I liked how resistant he is to love and commitment, and really liked seeing him proven wrong. Especially since he fights it so hard…you would think his life was in danger right? He can just make you melt.  I also liked the bit of magical element that Kleypas’s mixes in with the story…it added a bit more enchantment feel to the story, that just endeared me even more. I also loved the humor and the sense of playfulness that is shown all throughout the story. A Charming read that will just take you breath away and leave you breathless for more. A beautifully written story that is deeply satisfying that is rewarding!!! A Remarkable story of love, magic and commitment.
First Line
When Lucy Marinn was seven years old, three things happened: Her little sister Alice got sick, she was assigned her first science fair project, and she found out that magic existed.
My Favorite Quote
Lucy’s trembling fingers came to his lips, caressing them gently. “Are you sure? How do you know its not just about sex?”
“It is about sex…sex with your mind, sex with your soul, sex with the color of your eyes, the smell of your skin. I want to sleep in your bed. I want you to be the first thing I see every morning and the last thing I see at night. I love you the way I never though I could love anyone.”
My Review
I finally was able to get a hold of this book, which is a part of the most recent series by one of my all time favorite authors. When I first picked this up I had my doubts over whether or not I would like it, considering how short it is and all….however I was delightfully surprised by how enjoyable this story actually was. I really enjoyed how this author put the story together. I also loved the romance that grows between Mark and Maggie. Both characters were very endearing and you just want them to get together throughout it all. I especially fell in love with the little girl, Holly. I found her to be a bundle of joy, and very loveable.  Even though it was a short story, it was deeply satisfying. Overall a beautifully woven love story that teaches about the real spirit of Christmas and most of all….True Love!!! I am definitely going to have to read the next one in the series as soon as I can !!!  A TREASURE WORTH READING!!!
